April 2003

The 15th Golspie Golf Camp got under way amidst the beautiful Easter weather. After warming up on golf courses as far afield as Gleneagles, Inverness, Windyhill and Stornoway, the campers and leaders took on the challenge of Golspie Golf Course. The format for the week was stroke play in the morning (Team event) and then match play in the afternoon and evening. The team winners were David Black (Stornoway GC), D J MacLeod (Stornoway GC), Mark Campbell (Inverness GC) and Rev Eric Paterson (Golspie GC) The match play trophy went to Mark Campbell (Inverness GC) who beat Kenneth Cunningham (Stornoway GC ) in the final by one hole. During the week there was also time for golf tuition and this was kindly sponsored by “Watt Mortgage and Investment” of Glasgow. This was done under the watchful eye of local EGTF golf professional, Ronald Sutherland (Helmsdale), who put the campers through their paces. He also videoed their individual golf swings and gave tuition where required. The highlight of Camp each year is to play Royal Dornoch and this took place on the Thursday morning in near perfect conditions. At the end of the round, the smiles on the faces of the campers said it all! The Free Church of Scotland is grateful to all the local bodies who support this event and make it a very enjoyable week.
